Restoring old parquet – when to sand, when to replace?

A worn parquet floor doesn't need to be replaced – it just needs to be refurbished. Solid parquet can be sanded up to eight times, multi-layer parquet one to three times depending on the thickness of the top layer. After sanding, the type of finish matters: oil for a natural look, lacquer for maximum durability. The cost for a professional renovation is between 20 and 35 Euros per square meter – significantly cheaper than a new floor. An investment that almost always pays off.

An old parquet floor doesn't necessarily have to be replaced. In many cases, even a heavily worn wooden floor can be restored to a like-new condition by sanding and refinishing.

Can my parquet still be sanded?

  • Solid wood parquet: Can be sanded 5–8 times

  • Engineered wood parquet: Only 1–3 times, depending on the top layer thickness (2–6 mm)

  • Laminate: Not at all – the surface is just a printed film

The process of sanding parquet

1. Preparation:

Clear out furniture, sink protruding nails, remove doors.

2. Coarse sanding:

Belt sander with grit 24–40, remove old sealant.

3. Fine sanding:

Grit 60–100, edges with an edge sander.

4. Sealing:

 With oil (natural look) or varnish (durable). Several coats, sanding in between.

What does sanding by a professional cost?

  • Sanding: approx. €10 – 18/m²

  • Sealing (varnish): approx. €8 – 15/m²

  • Total including material: approx. €20 – 35/m²
