A wood floor can last for decades – if properly cared for. But many people make daily mistakes that permanently ruin their floors. Water, incorrect cleaning products, or overly aggressive methods leave marks that are difficult to undo.
Basic Rule No. 1: As little moisture as possible
The golden rule is: damp mopping, yes; wet mopping, never. The mop should be well-wrung – damp enough that it barely drips. Standing water on the floor penetrates the wood, causing it to swell and leaving unsightly white marks or creating gaps.
Oiled or varnished floor – that makes a difference
Varnished parquet
The varnish layer protects the wood and makes it easier to care for. For cleaning, a damp mop and a pH-neutral cleaning agent are usually sufficient.
Oiled parquet
Oiled floors must be regularly re-oiled (once or twice a year). Special oil-based soap cleaners are suitable for cleaning.
What you should never use on parquet
-
Steam cleaners – the steam drives moisture deep into the wood
-
Vinegar or vinegar-containing cleaners – attack the varnish
-
All-purpose cleaners with aggressive surfactants
-
Scouring powder or sponges with abrasive sides
The correct cleaning routine
Daily: Remove dust with a soft broom or a vacuum cleaner with a parquet nozzle.
Weekly: Damp mop in the direction of the wood grain.
Every 1–2 years: Re-oil oiled floors. Polish varnished floors or have them sanded if heavily worn.
Removing stains
Water-soluble stains: Dab immediately with a slightly damp cloth (do not rub).
Grease stains: Use mild dish soap and a little water, then wipe dry.
Stubborn stains: Special parquet stain removers – never acetone or solvents.
