Many people dream of warm wooden floors and underfloor heating – but can they really be combined? The short answer: Yes, but not with every type of parquet. We explain which types of wood and constructions are suitable, what to look for when buying, and what thermal resistance means – in an easy-to-understand way.

Why parquet and underfloor heating were previously considered problematic

Wood is a living material: It reacts to temperature and humidity, expanding and contracting. This makes parquet more challenging to combine with underfloor heating than other floor coverings – but it was never impossible.

In the past, excessively high surface temperatures and fluctuating indoor humidity often led to cracks, gaps, or warping. Today, thanks to improved technology and suitable wood products, this can be managed.

Which types of parquet are suitable for underfloor heating?

Multi-layer parquet (engineered parquet): The best choice

Multi-layer parquet is particularly well-suited for underfloor heating because its cross-glued layers compensate for tension caused by temperature fluctuations much better than solid wood. The top layer of real wood still provides a natural look and feel.

Solid parquet: Possible, but with limitations

Narrow solid planks (under 8 cm wide) made from hard, dimensionally stable wood types such as oak, ash, or walnut can also be laid on underfloor heating – but with stricter requirements for the initial heating period and maximum flow temperature.

What is thermal resistance and why is it important?

The thermal resistance (R-value) of a floor covering indicates how much it insulates heat. The higher the value, the more heat accumulates under the floor – and the less efficiently the heating works. For parquet on underfloor heating, manufacturers recommend a maximum thermal resistance of 0.10 m²K/W.

Rules for installation on underfloor heating

  • Maximum surface temperature: 27 °C (do not exceed)

  • Initial heating period: Before installation, gradually turn up and then cool down the heating system

  • Room humidity: Maintain 40–60% – excessively dry air causes parquet to crack

  • Screed must be completely dry and ready for covering

Which wood types are particularly suitable?

Oak:

The most popular choice – dimensionally stable, durable, beautifully grained.

Ash:

Slightly lighter, very stable, and well-suited for underfloor heating.

Bamboo:

Excellent – very hard, dimensionally stable, and sustainable.
