Laying parquet yourself can save a lot of money – and is definitely manageable for DIYers with good crafting skills. Floating click parquet is the most beginner-friendly method.
Suitable parquet types for DIYers
Click parquet (recommended): Interlock planks, no glue needed. Beginner-friendly and forgiving.
Glued parquet: Higher demands. More for experienced DIYers.
The tool list
-
Jigsaw or circular saw
-
Tapping block and rubber mallet
-
Pull bar, spacers, tape measure, square
Step 1: Prepare the subfloor
Dry, level (max. 3 mm over 2 m), clean, stable. Fill uneven areas with leveling compound. Don't forget to measure the moisture content of the screed.
Step 2: Acclimatize the parquet
Store in the room for at least 48 hours (preferably 72 h) – at normal room temperature. This allows the wood to adapt to the room climate and minimizes warping.
Step 3: Lay the impact sound insulation
Lay it on the subfloor, fix joints with adhesive tape. Provides impact sound insulation and compensates for minor unevenness.
Step 4: Installation
Start at the longest straight wall. Spacers on all walls (8–10 mm expansion gap). Insert click connections at a 30° angle. Stagger joints by at least 40 cm.
Step 5: Last row and finishing
Cut the last row to size. Use a pull bar to insert it. Remove spacers, install skirting boards.
Common mistakes
-
Forgetting the expansion gap – floor buckles
-
Parquet not acclimated – later gap formation
-
Door frame not undercut – door no longer opens
